Life as an Au Pair

Your second home

The fastest way to learn about a new culture is to immerse yourself in it. Living with a host family and caring for their children does just that. During a baseball game or weekend barbecues, on beach outings or Sunday picnics, you'll become familiar with American culture. It's like discovering America right in your new home! This is also a great opportunity for them to find out all about your country's customs.

A new home

For most of our au pairs, America is a long way from home. But we make you feel like it's "home" for your year abroad. That's why we carefully screen and choose our host families to ensure that you are happy and comfortable there. Most of our host families have had au pairs before -- in fact, 70% of them reapply each year. We know how important it is to feel welcome in a new environment, and your host family will truly make you feel like one of the family.

Each family is unique

Each American host family may have a different lifestyle and may live all across the country, near large cities or in small towns. Things such as whether or not both parents work, when and where they eat their meals, and how many children they have and the children's ages will vary from house to house. Yet they all will have a genuine interest in cultural exchange and a need for flexible childcare. koordinator.bmp

Excellent references

Your host family must have excellent references and sign a binding contract. After checking references, our experienced staff conducts an at-home interview to confirm that they meet all of our requirements and that you will be happy there.

Finding the right family

Cultural Care Au Pair has a unique individual matching service that allows us to accommodate your wishes and the host family's preferences. Based on your experience, interests and skills, we carefully select the family we feel is most suitable for you.

The Children

As an au pair, you spend a lot of time with the family's children (up to 45 hours per week). Our host families have children of all ages, from infants to school-aged. Some families have just one child, but many have two or more.

The children are your most important responsibility when you are an au pair. You'll learn about who they are, what they like and don't like, and how their way of life may differ from yours. As you help the kids with homework or play games after school, chat over eggs at breakfast or read their favorite bedtime story, you find out a lot about what growing up in America is like. And while the work can be challenging, it's also a ton of fun! AP_child_bubles.bmp

Typical Tasks

Once you've become familiar with your host family and the children, you'll find a comfortable daily routine. Below are some things that au pairs typically do. Remember, each family is unique, so your responsibilities may vary.

Part of the fun is that no two days are really ever the same!
  • Dressing the children
  • Driving to and from school and activities
  • Feeding and changing infants
  • Making breakfast and lunch
  • Helping with homework
  • Housework including picking up and doing laundry
  • Playing games
  • Accompanying family on weekend outings

Study opportunities

Meet new people, develop a special interest and further improve your English by taking classes at a local college. This is the perfect chance to make American friends and see what academic life here is like, while fulfilling your visa requirement of six academic credits. Choices can range from literature and history to art and politics to dance and sports courses. Your host family will give you up to $500 towards your studies.

There are alternatives to studying at a local college, such as taking a weekend course or a class through the mail. (Once you've arrived in the United States, Cultural Care can help you find local colleges and courses in your area). One example of a weekend class is offered through The College of Saint Rose at Silver Bay Association. This retreat is full of helpful topics like Effective Communication With Your Family, American Holidays, and Games for Children. This three-credit course includes all meals, lodging and materials and is only $220. Visit them online at www.silverbay.org.
